Healthy Relationships

Healthy relationships and meaningful social connections are important for mental and physical health. As social beings, our connections give life purpose and meaning, helping us not just to survive but to thrive.

Benefits of Social Connection:

  • Strong social ties are linked to reduced risks of conditions like obesity, heart disease, and certain cancers.
  • Loneliness is a major risk factor for mental health issues, including depression.
  • Research shows loneliness can be as harmful to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day or excessive alcohol consumption.

Modern Challenges:

  • The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted many social networks, and rebuilding these is crucial for well-being.
  • While technology can connect people, excessive screen time can reduce meaningful face-to-face interactions.

Resources to help to combat loneliness:

Offer walk and talk groups, tea and toast drop in session (in Meir Heath), and a 10 step loneliness programme.

Activity Groups:

Why not explore a new class to develop a new skill or enhance an existing one, all while making new friends? The University of the Third Age (U3A) has a local branch offering a variety of groups, including book clubs, crafting, line dancing, and fitness classes. It’s a great way to engage in social activities and promote both personal growth and well-being.

For individuals who no longer in full time work. Most members are aged 50 years and older but there is no lower age limit.

Volunteering:

Volunteering is a wonderful way to meet new people, find a sense of purpose, and enhance mental health. It offers an opportunity to connect with others and contribute to the community.
